Why images download as WebP
Most big websites now serve pictures as WebP because the files are smaller and pages load faster. When you right-click and save one, you get the WebP file too. Browsers open them fine, but older versions of Photoshop, Microsoft Office, many slideshow and printing tools, and some upload forms still don’t.
PNG works everywhere and is lossless, so nothing is lost converting to it.
Good to know
- Transparency is kept. Logos and stickers with see-through backgrounds stay see-through as PNG.
- Animated WebP converts as its first frame only.
- Need a smaller file? WebP to JPG is usually much smaller for photos.
Questions
Does converting WebP to PNG lose quality?
No. PNG is lossless, so the image is saved exactly as it was decoded from the WebP file.
Will a transparent background stay transparent?
Yes. PNG supports transparency, so see-through areas are kept.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Conversion happens in your browser and the files never leave your device.
