WebP or JPG?
WebP is a newer format that websites use because it’s smaller than JPG at the same quality. The catch is support outside the browser: plenty of desktop apps, phones, printers and upload forms still expect JPG.
JPG is the safe choice for photos you want to send, print or post.
Good to know
- Transparent areas turn white. JPG has no transparency. For logos and graphics with see-through backgrounds, use WebP to PNG instead.
- Quality. 90% is a good default. The JPG will often be a little larger than the WebP; that’s normal.
- Animated WebP converts as its first frame only.
Questions
Why is the JPG bigger than the WebP?
WebP compresses better than JPG, so the same picture usually takes more space as a JPG. Lower the quality slider to shrink it.
What happens to a transparent background?
JPG can’t store transparency, so transparent areas become white. Convert to PNG to keep them.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser, on your device.
