When you need PNG
Some design tools, print shops and upload forms ask for PNG specifically, and PNG is the better format to keep editing in, because saving it again never adds more compression.
One thing it can’t do is bring back detail. A JPG converted to PNG looks exactly like the JPG, just in a bigger file. And the background stays solid: converting doesn’t make it transparent.
Good to know
- Expect a bigger file. PNG photos are often several times the size of the JPG.
- Metadata is removed, including any GPS location from the camera.
Questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. It keeps the image exactly as it is, but detail already lost to JPG compression can’t be recovered.
Will the background become transparent?
No. The picture is copied as it is, so the background stays solid.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser.
