When 500 KB makes sense

Marketplace and classifieds listings, website galleries and blog images load faster under 500 KB, and many sites cap uploads around there. At this size even large photos usually keep their full resolution, just with smarter compression.

Good to know

  • For your own website, try WebP: it keeps more detail at the same size, and every current browser shows it. (Safari can't save WebP, so use Chrome, Edge or Firefox for that.)
  • Very large photos (over 4096 pixels on the long side) are scaled to 4096 first. Nothing on the web needs more.

Questions

How do I make a photo smaller than 500 KB?

Choose the photo, keep the target at 500 KB, and download the result. Most photos fit at high quality without being resized.

Should I use JPG or WebP?

JPG for anything you upload to forms or send to people; WebP for images on your own website, where it gives better quality at the same size.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser.
